GRAIN CHEST

Grain chest, from the year 1861.

Grain chest, with the manufacturing year 1861 inscribed on the inside. Chests were once one of the most important and oldest pieces of rural furniture. There are hay chests and grain chests. The most significant difference between them is that hay chests were richly painted and decorated, while grain chests were somewhat simpler. Rural chests are also very connected to the customs of that time. Especially hay chests were the most important part of a bride's dowry. Large and painted, they adorned the carriage carrying the dowry. Loading the chest was a major event in marriage customs. They loaded the chest with grain to make it particularly heavy. However, they faced significant challenges when lifting it, as the chest was already heavy. Before lifting it, the bride's sisters usually sat on it and only got up when the groom offered a sufficiently large sum of money. Then they loaded the chest onto the carriage, where the elder would sit and allow the carriage with the dowry to head towards the groom's homestead. Of course, it wasn't any easier for the groom and helpers from that point on, as they had to perform several tasks along the way. After all the tasks were completed, the chest finally reached its destination, where the bride would then keep her wedding dress in it. It's no wonder that there were many such chests in households, which, over time, ended up in the attic and were somewhat forgotten by the family. Before the First World War, it is also known that so-called "pantarji" used to go from house to house, taking handles from chests and then selling them on. Chests are still an important ethnological proof of our past, and they allow us to trace the development of rural and folk art. Rural chests are, therefore, an excellent addition to any home, as they honor our past and bring the folk art of our ancestors into our homes—a piece of furniture that connects us with history. Dimensions: 144 x 59 x 52 cm Weight: 35 kg The chest is in excellent condition.

SEGUSO LANTERN

Lantern from Murano Island, crafted by the Seguso glassworks in the 1930s.

A magical lantern that brings Venice into your home – designed to reflect light in a way that evokes the shimmering water of Venetian canals and bridges. The lantern is exquisitely crafted, showcasing the quality of precise handmade work and skilled manipulation. It is also a superb example of interwar decorative craftsmanship, from a time when most production was still artisanal rather than mechanical. With its organic shape, it fits harmoniously into almost any interior. Both functional and decorative, it is best appreciated in small spaces such as entryways, hallways, or conservatories – places where its beauty can be fully enjoyed and its magical light can spread across the walls. The lantern emits a gentle, slightly refracted glow, rather than a harsh diffused light, preserving the ambiance of the room.

The production of “caged” glass lamps partly began in response to the growing number of decorative art exhibitions, such as the Milan Triennale during the interwar period. Another likely influence was the traditionalist art movement known as the “Return to Order” – a revival of classicism across Europe as a reaction to the mechanical destruction caused by the First World War.
After the financial crisis of 1929, Murano experienced the closure of several key glassworks. To survive, many of them merged into groups, one of which was Artistica Soffiera e Vetreria – Barovier, Seguso & Ferro (Artistic Glassblowers and Glassmakers). This group included Luigi Ferro, Napoleone Barovier, and Antonio Seguso, along with Seguso’s sons Ernesto and Archimede. In 1934, Flavio Poli joined the company as an artistic advisor. This marked the beginning of an experimental era in color glass and innovative techniques, which led to international success. In 1937, Poli became a full partner and the company was renamed Seguso Vetri d’Arte, which remains its name today. It was during Poli’s first collaboration with Seguso (1934–1940) that the iconic “caged” glass lamps were born. These lights remain a symbol of Venetian glassblowing mastery to this day.
