VICTORIAN TAXIDERMY ROSELLA PARROT

The presented rosella parrot comes from the 19th century, a time when placing taxidermied animals under glass domes was a popular practice, particularly during the Victorian era. This tradition stemmed from a passion for natural history collections known as "cabinets of curiosities," where people would gather and display natural wonders such as minerals, exotic plants, and animals. Glass domes were often used to protect and showcase these collectible items, especially taxidermied animals. The popularity of this practice grew alongside a rising interest in natural sciences, fueled by major scientific discoveries and expeditions to exotic lands, which introduced new animal species. These collections reflected a sense of awe and fascination with nature, and they were part of the Victorian obsession with documenting and classifying the world. Taxidermy during this period was not only a scientific practice but also became a form of home decoration. Taxidermied animals under glass domes were displayed in homes as symbols of refined taste and education. The domes were designed to protect the specimens from dust and damage, allowing for long-term preservation. Within these glass enclosures, taxidermied animals were often arranged in elaborate scenes that could depict them in their natural habitats – as with the presented rosella parrot – or sometimes in purely artistic or imaginative settings. These exhibits were intricately crafted and carefully arranged to create the illusion of realism. However, by the end of the 19th century, this trend gradually faded as aesthetic tastes changed, as did the relationship with nature and animals. SCULPTURE OF VIRGIN MARY AND JESUS, 15. – 16. CENTURY

An exceptional wooden sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary seated on a throne with the Christ Child resting on her lap, holding a book in His hand. Sculptures of this type are known by the Latin term Sedes Sapientiae, meaning "Throne of Wisdom." This title represents one of the oldest appellations of the Virgin Mary. The concept is that Mary serves as the throne upon which Christ sits, Christ being understood in Christian theology as the embodiment of Divine Wisdom (Sapientia Dei).
The medieval character of this sculpture is further reflected in the depiction of Christ. Rather than being portrayed as a typical child, as became common in later centuries, He appears as a miniature adult. This follows the medieval theological idea that Christ was, from birth, the perfect God and Teacher.
The sculpture displays finely carved details, revealing the hand of a skilled and accomplished craftsman. The polychromy itself bears witness to the passage of time through later historical overpaintings and restorations. The various layers of paint allow us to trace, almost visually, the centuries through which this remarkable object has survived.

VINTAGE SATSUMA VASE

Today, it can be divided into two different categories: the original plain dark clay from early Satsuma, produced in Satsumi around 1600, and elaborately decorated export Satsuma in ivory tones, which began production in the nineteenth century in various Japanese cities. P. J. MÈNE, EWE AND LAMB, 1845

The bronze sculpture of a ewe with lamb (La brebis et son agneau) is the work of the French animalier sculptor Pierre‑Jules Mène, signed P.J. MÈNE 1845. This bronze was one of five animal sculptures that Mène presented at the Paris Salon in 1845. The sculpture depicts a lamb nursing beneath a standing sheep wearing a bell around its neck. The bronze has a dark patina and was cast without a foundry mark, characteristic of earlier 19th‑century casts, suggesting that it was cast in Mène’s own foundry.

Pierre‑Jules Mène (1810–1879) was one of the most important French animalier sculptors of the 19th century. TORTURE COLLAR
Torture collar from the second half of the 18th century.
An interesting object from bygone times that reminds us of the dark past of humanity. Torture devices like this one were popular since the Middle Ages and were used to humiliate, torture, and control convicts and slaves. The collar was placed around a person's neck, preventing normal movement, lying down, and overall comfort. Similar collars were also used on dogs, but without a lock, only with a buckle. In this case, the collar served to protect a dog guarding livestock from potential wolf attacks. G. MORETTI – “RAMON”

Giuseppe Moretti (1857–1935) was an Italian sculptor born in Siena who spent most of his career in the United States. He was educated in Italy and later worked in Zagreb before emigrating to the U.S. in the 1880s, where he became known for monumental public sculptures as well as deeply psychological portrait and figurative bronzes. He is still recognized today as the author of numerous large-scale monuments across the United States and highly ambitious smaller portrait busts such as the present work. Before his death, he returned to Italy and spent his final years in San Remo, where he passed away.

TABLE LAMP FONTANA ARTE
Table lamp, from the 1940s, produced by the renowned Italian company Fontana Arte.
A pair of exquisite table lamps, designed by Pietro Chiesa. They will perfectly complement bedside tables or shelves, creating an exceptional ambiance. Crafted from intricately engraved glass, with brass accents adding the finishing touch, these lamps are truly special. Pietro Chiesa, born in 1892 into the renowned Ticino artistic family, opened his own glass workshop, Bottega di Pietro Chiesa, in 1921 after apprenticing with furniture designer Giovan Battista Giannotta. He blended exceptional modernity with high technical knowledge in his work, creating stained glass for the Trieste stock exchange, the motor ship Victoria, and the transatlantic Conte di Savoia. In 1932, Gio Ponti invited him to join Fontana Arte as artistic director, a role that allowed him to express his creativity by designing over a thousand different items, including furniture, tables, lamps, windows, and artworks. Chiesa passed away in Paris in 1948. Fontana Arte originated from Luigi Fontana's glass plate manufacturing company established in 1881, which achieved great success in the construction sector, becoming one of Italy's largest glass producers. In the early 1930s, Fontana aimed to venture ambitiously into the artistic glass and decor market, hiring renowned Italian designer Gio Ponti to assist. Thus, in 1933, Fontana Arte was born, merging the same year with Pietro Chiesa's company, Bottega di Pietro Chiesa. Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa became the company's artistic directors. They quickly gained recognition and esteem for their refined glass products, including stained glass, lighting, mirrors, and even glass furniture. In the post-war years, amid economic turmoil, they continued crafting prestigious pieces, primarily for hotels and offices. In 1954, Max Ingrand took over as artistic director, ushering the company into a new era of success. With his creations, they regained prestige and acclaim. Fontana Arte went through several ups and downs but managed to survive to the present day. In 1998, Fontana Arte was even awarded the ADI Compasso d'Oro for its significant contribution to Italian design heritage. Today, they continue their design endeavors, collaborating with many 21st-century architects and designers. Their notable works can be found in prestigious museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where they are part of the permanent collection.
