CEILING LIGHT FONTANA ARTE
Ceiling light, made by the Italian company Fontana Arte, in the 1940s.
Colorful light, of interesting shape, is probably the result of the work of the designer Pietro Chiesa, who was active at Fontana Arte during those years. The light will enhance any space and enrich it. It is made of two glass domes, one of which features a colorful painting, complemented by beautiful high-quality brass details, testifying to the exceptional quality of this product. The Fontana Arte company evolved from a business founded by Luigi Fontana in 1881, where they produced glass panels. It achieved great success in the construction sector and became one of the largest glass producers in Italy. In the early 1930s, Fontana aimed to ambitiously enter the market of artistic glass and decor, so he hired the renowned Italian designer Gia Ponti to assist him. Thus, in 1933, Fontana Arte was established, which merged the same year with the company of Pietro Chiesa – Bottega di Pietro Chiesa. Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa became the artistic directors of the company. They quickly became a recognized and esteemed company, producing many refined glass products such as stained glass, lighting, mirrors, and even glass furniture. In the post-war years, when the economy was in turmoil, they continued to produce prestigious pieces, mainly for hotels and offices. In 1954, the artistic direction was taken over by Max Ingrand, which opened the doors to a new era for the company. With his creations, they proved themselves and regained a prestigious reputation. Fontana Arte went through several phases, both good and bad, but the company still survives to this day. In 1998, Fontana Arte even received the ADI Compasso d’Oro award for its significant contribution to the Italian design heritage. Today, they are still involved in design, and they invite many architects and designers of the 21st century to create. Their important works can also be seen in significant museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where their works can be found in the permanent collection. Making death masks is one of the oldest sculptural techniques, serving as a memory of the deceased or as a model for creating portraits. They are made by pressing the face of the deceased into wax or plaster, usually a few hours after death.
The particular death mask in question is original and is the first cast, as evidenced by the biological remains on the mask. Unfortunately, the identity of the man is unknown, but due to the features of the mask, it appears that he was a monk. An unusual addition to any room, carrying a profound symbolic meaning - Memento mori. Death masks are certainly one of the more intriguing traditions of humanity and a way people have preserved the memory of the deceased. The most famous death masks undoubtedly come from Egypt, where they were buried with the dead. Similarly, wax death masks from ancient Rome are known, which were used as models for carving into tombstones. A similar tradition continued for centuries until the end of the Middle Ages when they began to be made from plaster. At that time, masks began to be used in funeral rites, and then they were kept in libraries, museums, and universities. Death masks were made not only for royal members and nobility but also for prominent figures such as poets, philosophers, and playwrights. Like in ancient Rome, these death masks were often used for portraits, sculptures, busts, or engravings depicting the deceased. Dimensions: 31 x 20 x 14.5 cm Weight: 2.1 kg The mask is in excellent condition and has an iron hook for wall mounting.VASE DERUTA

Bronze statue of a French politician, made in the late 19th century.
This bronze statue was created after 1889, a time when France was experiencing genuine enthusiasm surrounding the defense of Cherbourg. During the annual naval maneuvers, the coastal defense warships Le Tonnant and Le Vengeur, stationed off the coast of Cherbourg, successfully repelled a simulated attack by larger and more powerful vessels. This boosted national confidence at a time when there was widespread concern about naval strength — the so-called “naval scares.”
The connection of the statue to this event is confirmed by the inscription on the base, where the names of both ships are engraved. Such statues were displayed by prominent French figures in their salons as an expression of their political stance and as a symbol of their nation’s technological power.
Thus, this piece is not merely decorative, but a historical object reflecting a specific moment in French history, making it significant for both collectors and history enthusiasts.
