BANCI FIRENZE CEILING LIGHT, 1960s

Banci Firenze takes its name from its founder, Giuseppe Banci, who first opened the company in 1899, initially as a shop and later expanding with a workshop dedicated to restoring chandeliers and mirrors. They soon became renowned as highly skilled craftsmen, working in traditional ways and using the same materials as in the past. The district in which Banci was located had, since medieval times, been known as a guild of artists and artisans, famous worldwide for its master blacksmiths. Thanks to this guild, the city of Florence grew into an economic and artistic powerhouse, attracting notable artists and craftsmen.
Inspired by the city’s history and by the knowledge gathered through years of restoration work, Giuseppe Banci began producing the first “Banci” chandeliers in the 1930s together with his two children, Gastone and Ghita. Although Gastone passed away young, the craft did not end there—Ghita continued running the business, and later Gastone’s three children also joined. It was this generation that elevated the Banci name to a new level, expanding into international markets and creating new lighting models. This led to new collections and unique pieces, developed in a flourishing symbiotic relationship between one-of-a-kind creations and small-series production.
Today, Jacopo Banci works alongside his father, Massimo Banci, making Banci a company that has maintained the cultural heritage and artisanal pride of Florence for over 100 years and across four generations.

ART DECO BAKELITE DESK LAMP FUTURIT 202
A Bakelite desk lamp made in the 1930s.
This legendary and rare Bakelite desk lamp, also known as the Futurit 202 model, was designed by the British designer Eric Kirkham Cole. With its refined and technically sophisticated form, it became one of the most recognisable Bakelite pieces of the Art Deco period. The lamp is cast entirely from dark brown-black Bakelite and features a pivoting arm and an adjustable shade that allow precise light direction—perfect for a desk or bedside table. It is also preserved with its original Bakelite switch.
The lamp carries a long history, which further highlights its popularity. It was first known as Plastalite and developed within the EKCO company, founded by Cole in 1924 and famous for its pioneering radio and television sets. Their production soon expanded to other Bakelite items, including table lamps manufactured under licence in Germany and the Eastern Bloc. The Futurit 202 model presented here was produced from 1932 onwards at the Gummon factory in Bratislava, where they used Futurit, an improved Bakelite mixture from the Bakelite Gesellschaft in Berlin. Due to their popularity, these lamps continued to be produced into the 1950s.

VINTAGE CRYSTAL LANTERN

An interesting lantern made of brass. Its special feature is that it has three panels made of cut crystal, which beautifully diffuse the light, and three panels made of engraved glass. This combination ensures that it will both brighten the space and illuminate it beautifully.

In 1969, when the landing occurred, millions of people were glued to their television screens, as the Moon landing had been a subject of fascination for years. People were anxious, not knowing what might befall the first astronauts. Would they encounter extraterrestrials? Would harmful radioactive rays kill them? There were more questions than answers, but people were still more curious and excited than frightened, thrilled that humanity could land on the moon and even travel through space. The successful landing and subsequent return to Earth thrilled humanity and inspired the imagination for years to come. It was and will forever be a story of what is possible with science, technology, and the will to achieve the impossible. Therefore, it's not surprising that during that time, people almost worshipped the Apollo 11 mission and produced items with a space theme. The first neon lights appeared as early as 1890, but they were used exclusively for industrial purposes, such as by miners in France who had neon lamps. Neon lights as we know them today appeared around 1910 when they were invented by French innovator Georges Claude. The first neon sign was created in 1915 for a Parisian hair salon. In 1923, the motor company Packard Motors purchased two neon signs for advertising in Los Angeles, bringing neon signs to America for the first time, where their popularity soared. Claude held a patent on neon lights, giving him a monopoly on them in the 1920s. Only after the patent expired and the secret of making these bright lights was revealed did others have the opportunity to start manufacturing them. That's when their popularity skyrocketed. In the 1930s, neon lights could be found in the Moulin Rouge in Paris, on the Las Vegas Strip, and in New York's Times Square. Over the next few decades, neon provided vibrant light, transforming ordinary buildings into continuous advertising displays for all types of businesses. Neon lights were even used for political purposes. In communist countries, buildings were decorated with them to give city residents the glamorous feel of Western metropolises. However, making neon lights was quite time-consuming and complex, as they had to be hand-blown and shaped, and then filled with gas. They also began to lose their futuristic charm in the 1960s, leading to a decline in their popularity, as they were replaced by more modern and cheaper lighting products. MID-CENTURY TV LAMP

Have you ever heard of a TV lamp? In the 1950s, the presence of television increased in middle-class households. Even in its infancy, television was already showing itself as a central part of the modern home. The "TV" was changing life in the same way as personal computers three decades later, and, like most technological inventions, there were concerns. Many times, people believed that watching television in a darkened room could cause eye damage. Considering that consumers were accustomed to watching movies in darkened theaters, it was quite natural for this tradition to be transferred to home viewing. Even the oldest televisions emitted quite small amounts of light, so watching in weak light was almost necessary. Soon, many televisions were equipped with a new ornament - a ceramic, illuminated figurine... the TV lamp. The ambient light created by these lamps seemed to reduce eye strain and allowed viewing without guilt. TV lamps soon became an essential addition to family television. Although they dominated as favorite household items for only about 10 years, their design significance continues to influence to this day. TV lamps were available in thousands of variations from hundreds of manufacturers, and although they were made from various materials, the vast majority were ceramic, coated with glossy glaze in one of the popular colors of that decade. Most of these charming household sculptures represented members of the animal kingdom (horses, deer, dogs, birds, domestic cats, and always popular panthers), while some depicted people, and others were simply exercises in abstract design.
