DEGE MASK

1.200,00

Dege Mask.

An African mask depicting the black monkey "Dege," from the Dogon people. The Dogon are an ethnic group in Mali. Masks crafted by this African tribe come in various styles, employing different geometric shapes in their designs, depending on the animal the mask is meant to represent. Most masks feature large eyes and stylized features, often painted or colored with various substances. The Dogon have been using masks since ancient times, particularly during the Dama ceremony, a memorial ritual for the deceased, believed to guide them to the realm of ancestors and restore order in the universe. These ceremonies often require a large attendance, with several hundred accompanying the deceased. Masks also appear in "baga-bundo" rites, performed before the burial of a Dogon male, which typically involve fewer participants. Inspiration for the masks comes from the animals found in their region, with common depictions including antelopes, rabbits, lions, hyenas, cows, birds, and monkeys. The specific mask represents the black monkey Dege. The Dogon typically use three types of monkey masks, distinguished only by color rather than shape. The black monkey is known as Dege, the white monkey as Omono, and the red monkey as Ko. Dimensions: 33.5 x 18.5 x 16 cm Weight: 1 kg The mask is in excellent condition.

SPRING-LOADED CANDLE HOLDER DITMAR

330,00

Spring-loaded candle holder made by the Ditmar company, produced between 1895 and 1907.

A rare example of a perfectly preserved spring-loaded candle holder. The candle holder, with its spring, allows you to adjust the height of the candle so that, regardless of the candle's length, it always stays at the same height. An interesting addition to a festive table or a shelf where you can always admire it. Karl Rudolf Ditmar, the founder of the Ditmar company, was born on May 3, 1818, in Prenzlau - Brandenburg. He came to Vienna in 1839. During a business trip to Paris, he is said to have encountered the still-controversial, heavy-working moderator lamp. Improving these lamps soon became his main concern. On August 5, 1840, Ditmar founded a trading company dealing with oil lamps, cups, and lacquered tin. The next step was establishing a workshop for lamp repairs, followed by an attempt at in-house production. Together with his brother Friedrich, whom he invited to Vienna, Rudolf led the company as "Gebrüder Ditmar" in 1841. For this purpose, a "state permit for the production of lacquered tin and zinc composite goods" was issued, creating a legal basis for the first lamp factory in Vienna and Austria. During this time, the brothers succeeded in developing the "Viennese moderator lamp," a spring-loaded lamp that was both inexpensive and reliable due to its adjustable oil supply. After the death of his brother Friedrich in 1858, "Gebrüder" was removed from the company's name, and it became Lampen Fabrik R. Ditmar. Even after his death in 1895, the company retained his name and tradition. Dimensions: 41 x 11.5 cm Weight: 510 g The spring-loaded candle holder is in excellent condition.

L. VIDAL ABUNDANTIA

460,00

Statue of the Goddess Abundantia, created by French sculptor Louis Vidal, second half of the 19th century.

A beautiful bronze sculpture depicting Abundantia, the Roman goddess of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. She holds a basket filled with grapes and fish, symbolizing the cornucopia – the horn of plenty – while she is accompanied by two cherubs and a swan, representing the richness of earth and water, fertility, nourishment, happiness, and protection of the home.

Such figures were often placed near entrance doors to invite abundance into the household and were also commonly positioned near safes or cash registers, as Abundantia was believed to protect wealth and bring prosperity.

The sculptor himself is equally fascinating: Louis Vidal (1831–1892), also known as dit Vidal le Borgne ("Vidal the Blind"), was a visually impaired French sculptor who trained himself to sculpt through touch alone. Despite his physical limitation, he created works of remarkable anatomical precision and expressive detail, becoming a respected and admired artist of the 19th century. He is best known for his realist and neoclassical style, as well as his animal sculptures (notably bulls and horses) and collaborations with greats such as Auguste Rodin.

This statue is therefore an exceptional collector's piece, rich in symbolism and offering the rare chance to own a work by one of the most intriguing French artists of the 19th century.

Dimensions: 34 × 21 × 18 cm

Weight: 5,8 kg
