ANTIQUE SAPPHO BUST

A magnificent, high-quality plaster bust of the ancient Greek lyrical poetess Sappho. She is depicted gazing upward and into the distance, wearing a cloak and a laurel wreath in her hair. The signature of the artist, sculptor H.L. Blasche, is on the back, along with the manufacturer’s mark from Reps & Trinte in Magdeburg. Sappho (circa 630–570 BC) was an ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos, and she was one of the most highly regarded poets of her time. Her poetry is known for its intimacy, sensuality, and emotional depth, often exploring themes of love, longing, and beauty. She primarily wrote lyric poetry, often accompanied by the music of the lyre, which allowed her to captivate audiences with her distinctive sensuality. Despite being a wife and mother, Sappho devoted much of her poetry to love for women, which led to her becoming a symbol of homosexual love, especially among women. Her influence gave rise to the term "lesbian," as she was born on the island of Lesbos. Although few details of her life are known, Sappho became a key literary and cultural icon, as many of her verses, as well as the image of a gentle and loving woman, have been preserved through the centuries and continue to inspire to this day. Her poetry was also highly regarded in antiquity, with Aristotle and other ancient writers ranking her among the Nine Muses. Though much of her work has been lost over the centuries, some poems, such as the famous "Hymn to Aphrodite," have been preserved almost in their entirety, while others remain as fragments. VENUS DE MILO STATUE
Statue of the Venus de Milo, made in Italy in the 1960s.
This exquisite statue of the Venus de Milo was crafted by Amilcare Santini (1910–1975), inspired by the renowned ancient Greek sculpture of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, also known as Venus de Milo. The Venus de Milo statue was created using a technique to which Santini himself contributed significantly. The process involved mixing marble, alabaster, and resin, which were then poured into pre-prepared molds crafted by the master himself. Once the material solidified at room temperature, the model was removed from the mold and hand-finished. Santini took great pleasure in creating replicas of works by Greek and Roman masters of sculpture and painting, and his sculptures are considered among the most prestigious museum-quality lines of sculptures in the world. Indeed, no replica is said to approach the originals as closely as those by Amilcare Santini. This stunning Venus sculpture was created by Amilcare Santini (1910-1975), based on the famous painting "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. The sculpture was made using a technique that Santini significantly contributed to developing. He combined marble, alabaster, and resin, which were then poured into pre-prepared molds that Santini had crafted himself. Once the material solidified at room temperature, the model was removed from the mold and then manually finished. VICTORIAN TAXIDERMY ROSELLA PARROT

The presented rosella parrot comes from the 19th century, a time when placing taxidermied animals under glass domes was a popular practice, particularly during the Victorian era. This tradition stemmed from a passion for natural history collections known as "cabinets of curiosities," where people would gather and display natural wonders such as minerals, exotic plants, and animals. Glass domes were often used to protect and showcase these collectible items, especially taxidermied animals. The popularity of this practice grew alongside a rising interest in natural sciences, fueled by major scientific discoveries and expeditions to exotic lands, which introduced new animal species. These collections reflected a sense of awe and fascination with nature, and they were part of the Victorian obsession with documenting and classifying the world. Taxidermy during this period was not only a scientific practice but also became a form of home decoration. Taxidermied animals under glass domes were displayed in homes as symbols of refined taste and education. The domes were designed to protect the specimens from dust and damage, allowing for long-term preservation. Within these glass enclosures, taxidermied animals were often arranged in elaborate scenes that could depict them in their natural habitats – as with the presented rosella parrot – or sometimes in purely artistic or imaginative settings. These exhibits were intricately crafted and carefully arranged to create the illusion of realism. However, by the end of the 19th century, this trend gradually faded as aesthetic tastes changed, as did the relationship with nature and animals.
