DEATH MASK
Death mask, made in 1928.
A plaster death mask, first casting, signed Schäper and dated 1928.
Death masks are certainly one of the more fascinating traditions of human history and a way in which people preserved the memory of the deceased. The most famous death masks undoubtedly originate from Egypt, where they were buried together with the dead. Ancient Roman masks made of wax are also well known; these were used as models for carving tombstones. A similar tradition continued for centuries until changes in production occurred toward the end of the Middle Ages, when plaster began to be used instead. At that time, masks were used in funeral rituals and later preserved in libraries, museums, and universities.
Death masks were not made only for royalty and nobility, but also for distinguished individuals — poets, philosophers, dramatists, and others. As in ancient Rome, these masks were often used as references for portraits, sculptures, busts, or engravings depicting the deceased. Today, death masks have somewhat fallen into obscurity, yet they remain a powerful reminder of mortality and carry a strong memento mori symbolism.

BRONZE FAUN AFTER THE POMPEII ORIGINAL, 19TH CENTURY
Bronze figure of a faun, made in the 19th century.
This fine bronze figure of a faun is a high-quality historical replica of the famous antique bronze Faun from Pompeii, discovered in the House of the Faun (Casa del Fauno), after which the house itself was named. The sculpture closely follows the ancient original; however, the genitalia, which are exposed on the original, are here discreetly covered with a leaf, a feature characteristic of the moral and aesthetic norms of the 19th century.
The replica presented here was almost certainly produced in the 19th century primarily as a souvenir for affluent travelers undertaking the so-called “Grand Tour” — the traditional educational journey across Europe, in which Italy, owing to its rich history and culture, was a key destination.
In ancient symbolism, the faun represents nature in its untamed state, fertility, eroticism, freedom, as well as dance and joy. This gives the sculpture additional depth, making it not only a decorative and collectible object but also a symbolic piece that brings classical charm and meaning into an interior.
Dimensions: 37 × 14,5 × 13 cm
Weight: 1,8 kg
The bronze sculpture of the faun is in good condition.

LARGE POLYCHROME TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE, ITALY, CCA. 1900
Large polychrome terracotta sculpture, made in Italy, circa 1900.
This unusually large terracotta sculpture immediately evokes the seaside, masterfully depicting two boys caught in a moment of carefree play. The composition feels light and full of life, while the modeling of the figures is exceptionally convincing: the bodies are naturally formed, the movement relaxed, and the facial expressions rich in character. The sculptor captured not only form, but also mood, revealing the hand of a highly skilled artist.
The original polychromy shows the gentle traces of time, with a patina developed over decades that is not a flaw, but an integral part of the sculpture’s story. Along the edges of the shell, small and very carefully executed older restorations are visible; they blend harmoniously into the whole and attest to the long life of this remarkable piece.
The sculpture is unsigned, which is characteristic of high-quality decorative terracotta sculpture from this period.
Due to its impressive size, rare level of craftsmanship, and strong expressive presence, this is an outstanding artistic object. It is ideally suited to be displayed as a standalone focal point in an interior, where it will draw attention through both its playful subject matter and exceptional sculptural quality.
Dimensions: 61 × 34 × 30 cm
Weight: 6,2 kg
The sculpture is in good condition.

JESUS IN EBONY
Jesus Christ in Ebony, created in the mid-20th century
A hand-carved depiction of Jesus Christ, made entirely from solid ebony, executed in the characteristic style of the Makonde carving tradition of East Africa. The sculpture is defined by an ascetic facial expression that reflects an African approach to the sacred figure—symbolic, restrained, and inward rather than dramatic. The absence of the cross and explicit signs of martyrdom points to an inculturated Christian iconography, in which Christ is presented as a universal spiritual figure expressed through a local visual language.
The choice of material is particularly noteworthy: ebony holds strong symbolic significance in many African cultures and is also exceptionally difficult to work, indicating the hand of an experienced and skilled carver.
This representation of Christ is therefore an excellent collector’s and decorative piece, combining Christian iconography with one of the most important carving traditions of sub-Saharan Africa, and carrying a strong cultural and spiritual presence.
Dimensions: 35 × 30 × 5 cm
Weight: 0.4 kg
Statue is in excellent condition
