Plia chair, manufactured in the late 1960s. Designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli.
The iconic folding Plia chair was first introduced at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1967 and immediately garnered immense public enthusiasm. Its revolutionary folding mechanism offered a completely new concept for folding chairs. The main advantages of this exceptional chair are its lightweight construction, adaptability, and the ability to be used both indoors and outdoors. The folding mechanism was entirely novel and highly innovative for its time. The chair relies on one of its metal discs to connect the backrest, seat, and legs, allowing it to be folded into a compact, flat shape just five centimeters thick. Speaking about this innovative concept, designer Piretti referred to it as the "Thonet of the 20th century." He explained, "If you look at a typical folding chair from the side profile, you'll see it has three joints. I found a way to condense that triangular mechanism into a single joint that looked so elegant and beautiful that I wanted it to be fully visible." Additionally, the chairs can be stacked on top of each other or hung on a specially designed wall hook when folded. The Plia chair was not only revolutionary in its folding mechanism but also in its use of plastic, a material that was still finding its place in the furniture industry at the time. Combining a metal frame with a plastic seat and backrest, the Plia chair became a symbol of 1970s design. It is also partially connected to our region, as it received the BIO5 award at the Ljubljana Biennial in 1971 and another award in Germany in 1973. Its iconic status is further evidenced by its inclusion in exhibitions at museums of modern art, such as the legendary Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. The Plia chair is an ideal seat for any household. With its modern appearance and materials, it complements contemporary interiors perfectly, including apartments, terraces, cafes, and offices. Being foldable and incredibly compact in its folded form, it is ideal as an auxiliary chair for any home, as it can be easily stored until its next use. However, we are confident that this cult chair will find its place as an everyday chair, as its vibrancy and unmistakable design will bring a special charm to any space. ANTIQUE CHAIR
Antique chair, made in England between 1750 and 1850.
This chair is a typical example from the late 18th to early 19th century. It features a drawer under the seat, providing storage for various items. Due to its solidity, it's incredibly eye-catching, making it an excellent piece for highlighting and enriching a space. The chair itself boasts other wonderful details that only such an old piece can have. These include wooden pegs, which often replaced expensive iron nails in those times since they were hand-forged. Another detail is the beautifully patinated wood, which, upon touch, tells the story of its rich history. Most captivating is its shape, as the chair is not precisely formed and exhibits many asymmetrical details, lending it a playful naivety and confirming that it was entirely handmade, without the aid of mechanized tools. The story behind the chair with a drawer is also fascinating, as there are several versions. One story suggests that such chairs were made on farms in England for those assisting in lambing. The person would sit on this chair, waiting for the lambing, with a drawer under the seat containing a Bible and whisky to sustain them. These chairs were typically made by carpenters not accustomed to furniture-making, which explains the asymmetrical shape. Another tale suggests that such chairs were found in wealthier households, known as "salt thrones" as they stored salt, a prestigious spice at the time, in the drawer. Sitting on such a chair during a meal signified a special honor, as being seated above the salt was a mark of distinction. Thus, this chair is a true throne of history, capable of telling many stories of the past and inspiring us with its grandeur. BREMSHEY DINETT SERVING CART
Bremshey Dinett serving cart, cca. 1950s, Solingen, Germany.
The Bremshey Dinett serving cart is a mid-century furniture icon, now available as a charming addition to your home. Crafted from chromed metal and rosewood-patterned veneer panels, the surface was made using a unique technique where wood was impregnated with synthetic resin and compressed to create a durable and almost indestructible finish known as "Gerlinol." This particular cart boasts a rare vintage floral pattern, enhancing its charm and decorative value. Renowned for their exceptional quality and functionality, Bremshey serving carts were revolutionary for their time. Early models did not feature branding on the cart itself, as the creators had such confidence in their design that they felt no need for additional trademarks. Instead, customers received a company seal and a label beneath the cart, touting its advantages: "Resistant to water, fruit juices, alcoholic beverages, and kitchen acids; heatproof and virtually unbreakable. Retains its brilliant appearance even after years of use. Simply rinse with cold or warm water." Over the decades, these promises have proven true, as this serving cart remains in excellent condition despite its age. Beyond its quality, its versatility is a standout feature. The cart folds completely for easy storage and can also be partially folded into a unique shelf on wheels. Whether used for serving drinks and snacks at a party, as shown in 1950s and 1960s advertisements, or as a stylish side table or plant stand in everyday life, this cart is as practical as it is elegant.
