The models for this painting were Angelina Cian (11 years old) and her younger brother. Although originally not painted as a religious image, it became popular as an image of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus and became the most famous among Ferruzzi's works. Although the original has disappeared, this did not prevent the image from becoming extremely popular and therefore often copied.
