When the candle burned down to the top of the holder, it was time for the suitor to leave immediately. Thus, the candle served as a silent but clear reminder to the suitor of when the date should end. This practice aimed to teach daughters to respect their parents' judgment and encourage suitors to respond to the father's discretion.
