Haven’t heard of a TV lamp?

In the 1950s, the presence of television increased in middle-class households. Even in its infancy, television was already seen as a central part of the modern home. “TV” was changing life in the same way a personal computer would three decades later, and like most technological inventions, there were concerns. Many believed that watching television in a darkened room could cause eye damage. Considering that consumers were used to watching movies in darkened theaters, it was only natural for the tradition to transfer to home viewing. Even the earliest televisions emitted relatively low levels of light, so watching in subdued lighting was almost a necessity.

Soon, many televisions were adorned with a new decoration: the ceramic, illuminated figurine known as a TV lamp. The ambient light these lamps provided was thought to reduce eye strain and enable viewing without guilt. TV lamps quickly became a ubiquitous accessory for family television. Although they dominated as favorite household items for only about a decade, their design significance still influences today. TV lamps came in thousands of iterations from hundreds of manufacturers, and while they were made from various materials, the majority were ceramic, coated with glossy glaze in one of the popular colors of that decade. Most of these charming household sculptures depicted members of the animal kingdom (horses, deer, dogs, birds, domestic cats, and the ever-popular panther), some portrayed people, while others were purely abstract design exercises.
