An intriguing wooden statue of Saint Rita.
Saint Rita of Cascia is one of the most beloved saints in the Catholic Church, known as the patroness of impossible cases and those in desperate situations.
Rita was a nun in the Augustinian convent in Cascia, central Italy. From an early age, she displayed profound spiritual devotion, despite being married to a difficult and violent husband, whom she eventually converted through her faith. After his violent death and the loss of their two sons, she entered the convent, where she spent the rest of her life in prayer and penance. Around the age of sixty, while meditating on Christ’s suffering, she received a partial stigmata in the form of a wound resembling a thorn from Christ’s crown on her forehead. She bore this wound until her death. After her passing, her body remained incorrupt, placing her among the “incorruptibles” in Catholic tradition. Her body is still preserved and venerated at the Basilica of Saint Rita in Cascia, which has become an important pilgrimage site. Relics of Saint Rita are also preserved in other churches worldwide, especially in Italy and the USA.
Saint Rita is the patroness of those in hopeless situations, as well as of loneliness, infertility, widows, women in difficult marriages, parents, orphans, the sick, and those suffering physical wounds. Due to her extraordinary faith and sacrifices, she is also venerated as a symbol of hope during life’s most challenging moments.
