However, she is also the patron saint of farmers, architects, construction workers, roofers, masons, foundry workers, blacksmiths, stonemasons, artillerymen, carpenters, gravediggers, bell-ringers, cooks, butchers, prisoners, firefighters, the dying, as well as protection against storms and fire. She is also the patron saint of tunnels, so there is a custom to create a small altar with Saint Barbara before the construction of a tunnel, as an invocation for the safety of all involved in the construction.
