Mascara is believed to have been placed on buildings to ward off evil spirits. Mascara is most commonly found in architecture during the Art Nouveau period. You can still use it for its original purpose by incorporating it into the facade or exterior of a building, or it can serve as an eccentric decoration on your wall.

Today, it can be divided into two different categories: the original plain dark clay from early Satsuma, produced in Satsuma around 1600, and elaborately decorated export Satsuma in ivory color, which began to be produced in the nineteenth century in various Japanese cities. The presented piece is from a later period, but since the manufacturer's mark is not visible or cannot be found, the exact age is challenging to determine.
