Deruta, located in the hills of Umbria, has been globally renowned for the production of artistic ceramics since the Middle Ages. Deruta is still today the center of Italy's largest production of artistic majolica. Artistic production had exceptional opportunities to showcase its pottery masterpieces from the earliest periods: in the Assisi monastery. In the Franciscan archives in Assisi, documents from 1358 and 1359 were found, mentioning the potter and wholesale merchant Cecce d'Alessandro, who sold hundreds of ceramic pieces to monasteries.
