This tradition continues for centuries until the end of the Middle Ages when there was a shift in the material used, and masks began to be made of plaster. During this time, masks started to be used in funeral ceremonies and were later kept in libraries, museums, and universities. Death masks were not only made for royal and noble figures but also for prominent individuals such as poets, philosophers, and playwrights.
